MEDIA-PRESS RELATIONS: A SEMINAR FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT SPOKESPERSONS

14-15, 2011
A two-day seminar for a designated public information officer,
chief, assistant chief or other personnel who serve as a spokesperson for their agency
with the media during an event involving wide community interest. The program is
designed primarily for those with little or no formal training on dealing with the
media. It will present fundamental information to assist such personnel to enhance
their skills in serving as the liaison between their department and the media.. Topics
include: (1) legal issues and consequence for the information officer; (2) freedom
of information laws; (3) dealing with hostile press representatives; (4) being on
call--a necessary evil; (5) initial releases when all the facts are not available;
(6) determining what information may or may not be released; (7) appearing professional
before the camera and microphone; (8) speaking with one agency voice; (9) using the
media to your advantage; (10) how to prevent from being misquoted; and (11) when
a major situation occurs...a self-analysis that will force you to re-examine your
emergency plan and procedures with the media. INSTRUCTOR: Cynthia Scott, Public
Information Officer, Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, Freehold, New Jersey.
DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Seminar will be conducted March 14-15, 2011 at
the Mercer County Police Academy at the Dempster Fire Center, 350 Lawrence Station
Road, Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Class will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m .daily.
